DUI Crash Claims Life of Police Officer

Matthew Gibbs, 32, of Modesto, was arrested on suspicion of murder and drunken driving. The arrest came after a crash that claimed the life of an off-duty Modesto police officer. The LA Times reports on the incident.

Tuesday night, Gibbs was driving a Volkswagen when he collided with the rear of the off-duty officer’s bicycle. The accident occurred near Fine and Merle Avenues according to the statement released by the California Highway Patrol.

The police officer was thrown from his bike and died at the scene. Following the collision, Gibbs’ vehicle veered towards a curb and then collided with a fire hydrant.

A video posted to the department’s Twitter account Police Chief Galen Carroll described the officer’s death as a “huge loss for his family and the Modesto Police Department, the community, and the officer’s family.”

The California Highway Patrol described the victim only as a 38-year-old male. He was not identified.

Gibbs was arrested after displaying signs of being impaired at the scene.
