Matthew Gibbs, 32, of Modesto, was arrested on suspicion of murder and drunken driving. The arrest came after a crash that claimed the life of an off-duty Modesto police officer. The LA Times reports on the incident.
Tuesday night, Gibbs was driving a Volkswagen when he collided with the rear of the off-duty officer’s bicycle. The accident occurred near Fine and Merle Avenues according to the statement released by the California Highway Patrol.

A video posted to the department’s Twitter account Police Chief Galen Carroll described the officer’s death as a “huge loss for his family and the Modesto Police Department, the community, and the officer’s family.”
The California Highway Patrol described the victim only as a 38-year-old male. He was not identified.
