DUI Driver Kills Father of 6 in Ensenada

Hoodline.com reports that a father of six was killed in a freeway crash near Ensenada late last month as he was traveling to a family reunion.

Authorities say that the fatal crash happened on Wednesday, July 26, in the southbound lanes of Interstate 805 near Camino De La Plaza to pick up his mother and daughter for a family trip. Just before noon, the 57-year-old father’s vehicle was struck head-on by a wrong-way motorist.

The California Highway Patrol’s Sgt. Hope Maxon told reporters that an eyewitness had seen a white Audi sedan heading toward the point of entry make a sudden U-turn before striking the victim’s Honda minivan head-on.

“Our understanding is that they turned around at the point of entry and came the wrong way,” Sgt. Maxon said.

Investigators believe that the sedan driver may have missed the last US exit and began driving the wrong way on I-805.

The CHP and emergency crews responded to the crash. The man in the minivan was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the Audi has been identified as 29-year-old Fernando Goneortiz. Goneortiz was also injured in the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital with major but non-life-threatening injuries. Immediately following his release by doctors, the suspect was arrested on felony suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
