A tragic story in the Chicago area demonstrates what can happen when those who are truly addicted to alcohol lose control of themselves. Most people do deserve a second chance after a scare with DUI, but there are some people who cannot handle the substance and end up in situations like these.
A judge released a woman on probation for their DUI charge and ordered her to stay off the road. She had previously spent three months in jail and was receiving treatment in jail for her third DUI in nine months. That same judge has now sentenced her to 13 years in prison after the accident that she got into that nearly killed a state trooper.
The woman pled guilty to aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. The man injured was new to the Illinois State Police, just on his first month of solo patrol. When the officer was hit, it was uncertain whether or not he would survive. He did survive, but had to go through months of physical therapy and walking on crutches, as well as several surgeries to help his bones heal. He and many of his fellow officers were present during the sentencing.
Thankfully, the officer has recovered enough to begin patrolling again.
