Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Into a Home in South L.A.

KTLA reports that a man suspected of driving while intoxicated after he crashed his Mercedes SUV into a home late Sunday night.

The incident happened at approximately 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of 110th Street and Normandie in the residential Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles.

The crash showing the SUV barreling into the residence was captured on home surveillance cameras inside and outside the home. Video footage shows the Mercedes ramming through a metal fence before slamming into the house.  

A female passenger who was inside the SUV can be seen on the ground outside the vehicle holding her French bulldog. The man driving the Mercedes can be seen behind the wheel. 

The Los Angeles Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the crash scene. 

Paramedics transported both the man and woman to an area hospital for treatment. Authorities had not released their identities or current condition at the time of the report. 

No other injuries were reported.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation. Intoxication by alcohol and/or drugs is suspected to have played a role. While being interviewed by law enforcement officers, the SUV driver told investigators that the dog was stolen from the scene.

Authorities say the damage to the structure is substantial. Whether the home can be repaired or is no longer safe for habitation is uncertain.
