Santa Ana Unified School Board VP Arrested for DUI

MyNewsLA reports that the Santa Ana Unified School District Board Vice President has been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Officer Natalie Garcia, spokesperson for the Santa Ana Police Department, told the press on Thursday that Alfonso Alvarez was involved in a minor traffic collision at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Edinger Avenue on Saturday, July 29, at approximately 8:00 p.m.

Santa Ana Police Department dispatchers received a call requesting officers to come to the scene of an accident in which they were involved. The caller told dispatchers that the other driver did appear intoxicated.

When approached by officers responding to the crash, Alvarez admitted that the collision was his fault. Officers noted that Alvarez was displaying symptoms of possible intoxication. After concluding field sobriety testing, Alvarez was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officer Garcia noted that Alvarez had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant but was released shortly after this most recent arrest.

Alvarez was first elected to the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) Board in 2016 and is an advocate of progressive education initiatives.

Several news agencies have contacted Alvarez and the SAUSD for comment. So far, neither has responded to multiple requests.
