SFGATE Bay Area News reported recently that a man who was suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) was killed after being struck by a patrol vehicle driven by a San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputy on the evening of Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
According to spokespeople from the California Highway Patrol and officials with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) along the southbound lanes of US. Federal Highway 101 north of Broadway in the Burlingame area. California Highway Patrol troopers observed a black Honda Civic which was disabled on the southbound right shoulder of the roadway, and spoke with the driver. They allegedly detected signs that the driver was under the influence of intoxicants and after the man failed a field sobriety test, he fled from arrest on foot.
The suspect ran across U.S. 101, across the center median into the northbound lanes where he was struck by a vehicle driven by a San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputy. He suffered major injuries as a result of the collision and died at the scene of the accident. The deputy was uninjured.
