DUI Motorist Responsible for Police Officer’s Death Remains Hospitalized

Patch.com reports that a 20-year-old driver who is accused of driving at speeds more than 100 miles per hour while intoxicated and causing a fatal crash that killed a Los Angeles Police Department officer and his passenger is still in the hospital.

During a news conference over the weekend, LAPD Chief Michel Moore told reporters that the crash happened at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, at 1801 W. Roscoe Boulevard when a driver in a black BMW crashed into the off-duty police officer’s white Infiniti sedan.

Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department were called to the scene, where they found three people trapped inside the two vehicles. One of the vehicles was lodged against a building and a damaged fire hydrant.

Firefighters extricated three victims. A woman who was a passenger in the BMW was able to free herself from the car. She was rushed to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Unfortunately, however, once extricated from the wreckage of their car, the LAPD officer and his front-seat passenger were declared dead at the scene.

Investigators estimate that the unidentified and underage driver was intoxicated at the time of the fatal crash. Police say they will release his name once he is released from the hospital and booked into custody.

In a later statement, the LAPD said, “The investigation is in the skilled hands of the Department’s Multi- Disciplinary Collision Investigation Team.”
