Child Delivered After Horrific DUI Accident Released From Hospital

CBS Los Angeles followed up on a tragic recent accident that led to a child being delivered by emergency surgery after the mother was killed by an allegedly drunk driver. They report that the newborn has been released from the hospital to go home with her grieving father.

The child and her father received a standing ovation from medical personnel as they left the University of California-Irvine Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Monday, where the newborn had been since an accident on August 11 claimed the life of her mother. The expecting parents had been walking on Katella Avenue in Anaheim, near the intersection with Bayless Street, when a Jeep driven by an allegedly drunk driver drove onto the sidewalk and killed the 35-weeks-pregnant mom. An emergency C-section saved the life of the child.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office reports that the driver who killed her had multiple prior DUI convictions. The driver, a 40-year-old metro Los Angeles woman, has been charged with second-degree murder, driving under the influence (DUI) causing injury, and driving on a suspended or revoked license due to a DUI.

The father thanked the hospital staff profusely in a video taken as he and his daughter left the hospital three weeks after the tragic accident.
