KCRA 3 reports a couple who were walking together on a sidewalk in Sacramento County died after an allegedly intoxicated driver struck them on Tuesday night.
According to a statement released by the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at approximately 8:27 p.m. when the victims, a man and woman, believed to be in their 50s or 60s, were struck by a woman heading southbound on Elkhorn Avenue.
CHP officers, along with firefighters and paramedics with the Sacramento Fire Department, responded to the scene just east of Hillsdale Avenue. Investigators say that the suspect driver of a Honda Civic swerved off the road and onto the sidewalk, striking the couple.
Both the man and woman reportedly died at the scene.
The suspect, a woman in her late teens or early 20s, was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect driver. The victims’ names have been withheld pending notification of family members.
