405 Closed After Officer Injured By Alleged DUI Driver

While police officers place their lives on the line on a daily basis, perhaps no more so than when they stop someone on a freeway. Vehicles traveling at high speeds and distracted drivers aren’t the only thing they have to be concerned with when they make such a stop. They must also concern themselves with drivers who might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Daily News reports on a 405 Freeway crash that seriously injured an officer while he was ticketing another driver.

The crash occurred on Monday, December 11 at about 11:47 p.m. on the 405 Freeway not far from Santa Monica Boulevard.

An officer, whose name has not been released, had just pulled over a driver in a Honda Accord for allegedly speeding. The cop was outside his Ford Explorer SUV, which had been parked behind the Honda. This was when a 2003 Infiniti Q35 crashed into the SUV, which in turn struck the officer.

The officer suffered a serious leg injury according to reports at the scene of the accident. He was hospitalized in unknown condition.

CHP officers arrested the driver of the Infiniti. Douglas Donovan, 34, of Woodland Hills, was arrested and booked on suspicion of DUI. He was not injured in the accident.

Other CHP officers were driving near the scene at the time of the accident and were able to render aid.
