21-Year-Old DUI Driver Suspected in Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash

According to a story appearing on the My News LA website, a 21-year-old man has been arrested for DUI and his role in a fatal, three-vehicle crash on Sunday.

Felony charges have been brought against Angel Gabriel Torres Hernandez of Cathedral City after he allegedly was traveling northbound on Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City and made an unsafe turn into the southbound lanes, striking two other vehicles. 

At approximately 11:21 p.m., Cathedral City Police dispatchers received a report of the collision near Date Palm Drive and Varner Road. Police, Cathedral City Fire Department firefighters, and paramedics responded to the crash scene. One of the southbound drivers, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses told police that Hernandez had fled the scene shortly after the collision. He was found and arrested by police a short time later.

Hernandez was taken to the John J. Benoit Center in Indio, where he remains in custody. He is facing several charges, including the felony charge of suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily harm or death, and one misdemeanor count of driving without a license. He faces additional sentencing enhancement allegations of causing a bodily injury to a person over 70, having multiple victims, and fleeing the scene of an accident with injury or fatality.

A judge has set Hernandez’s bond at $70,000.
