Police Officer Injured By Suspected DUI Driver

While everyone was celebrating the July 4 celebrations, a police officer in Santa Paula got more than he bargained for when he responded to the call of illegal fireworks late Sunday night.

KTLA reports that at approximately 11:00 p.m., police in Santa Paula received a report of illegal fireworks being fired off near the intersection of Steckel Drive and Estriga Court. Police officers responded to the area.

While one of the officers responding to the call was standing next to his police cruiser, a motorist heading northbound on Steckel Drive struck the driver’s side door of the squad car. The vehicle then swerved and struck the police officer.

Ventura County Fire Department Paramedics, responding to the scene, transported the officer by ambulance to an area hospital. He was treated for undisclosed non-life-threatening injuries. Officials say that the officer was released from the hospital on Monday morning and is at home recovering from the injuries they suffered in the crash.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene of the crash. After checking his blood alcohol level determined that 40-year-old Anthony Aceves of Santa Paula had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

Aceves was taken to the Ventura County Jail, where he is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.

The incident is still currently under investigation.
