Mother Killed & Child Critically Injured by Suspected DUI Motorist

KABC in Los Angeles reports that a mother was killed, and a suspected drunk driver critically injured her young daughter while they were waiting for relatives at a bus stop for the arrival of relatives on Thanksgiving Day.

In a statement, the Los Angeles Police Department said that the tragic crash unfolded at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of W. 83rd Street when the suspect exited a liquor store parking lot and struck another vehicle traveling southbound on Western Avenue.

In a chain reaction, one of the vehicles involved in the collision was sent hurtling toward the woman and her child.

The woman and her daughter were rushed to an area hospital by paramedics for treatment of critical injuries. The suspect driver was also taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Authorities say that despite all life-saving efforts made by doctors and hospital staff, the woman died as a result of the injuries she suffered in the incident. The 9-year-old girl remains in critical condition.

LAPD officers arrested the suspect driver on suspicion of DUI immediately following his release by doctors. Officials have not yet released any further information about the suspect.

“I feel sad,” a family member at the scene told reporters, “My heart is crushed for my niece and my cousin. All I want is for police to do their job the way they’re supposed to.”
