Fatal Head-On Collision may have been due to DUI

On Collision may have been due to DUI

A DUI can have life-altering consequences.  You can lose your license and have to pay huge fines and legal fees.  In addition, you can injure yourself or others, which can lead to even more serious charges.

A deadly crash occurred in Pico Rivera in the early morning hours of Monday, July 11.  Two men were killed in the accident, which police say was a head-on collision.  The driver of the suspect vehicle was suspected of driving under the influence.

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. in the 5500 block of Paramount Boulevard according to police from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pico Rivera station.

Police identified the two victims as Javier Gonzalez, 64, and Rodrigo Mendez, 59.  Police said that both were in a Honda on their way to work when the crash happened.  Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified 21-year-old David Mendizabal as the driver of the other car.  He sustained life-changing crush injuries to his legs.  He was taken to LAC+USC Medical Center for treatment.  Mendizabal was driving a Cadillac at the time of the accident.  Police had not released specific details about the accident, but said that Mendizabal will likely be charged with DUI.

Eloy Lara, an off-duty paramedic, rushed to the scene when he heard the impact.  He first checked the two victims and felt nothing, so he turned his attention to Mendizabal.  Lara reported that he smelled alcohol and asked Mendizabal if he had been drinking.  Reportedly, Mendizibal confirmed that he had been drinking.

Police are still working to determine if charges of vehicular manslaughter should be filed.
