DUI Driver Shot by Police After High-Speed Pursuit

NBC Los Angeles reports that a suspected DUI motorist was shot and later arrested after a road rage incident that led to a high-speed pursuit.

Authorities say that Huntington Park Police Department dispatchers received a call of a road rage incident in their jurisdiction on Saturday night. Officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, but the driver refused to yield.

Instead of stopping, the suspect led police on a high-speed pursuit through the streets, ending up in Hacienda Heights. The pursuit ended in the 15400 block of Garo Street. There, the suspect attempted to escape by ramming multiple Huntington Park Police cruisers. At least one of the officers opened fire on the suspect vehicle.

In a statement, the Huntington Park Police Department said that a 51-year-old male driver suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was transported to an area hospital in what was described as “critical but stable condition.”  He is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time.

The suspect’s identity had not been released at the time of the report.

One police officer was said to have been injured in the incident. He is expected to be ok.

Because it was an officer-involved incident, homicide detectives will conduct the investigation.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department asks anyone with any information about the incident to contact them at (323)  890-5500.
