Cops are out for the Holiday Weekend

Holidays are often times when authorities see a notable rise in DUI occurrences. Because of this, many law enforcement agencies ramp up DUI checkpoints and enforcement during holiday periods. With the Memorial Day weekend occurring, Los Angeles County is no exception.

In an attempt to crackdown on DUI crimes, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Detail is dispatching officers for DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints and saturation patrols countywide.

Officers will be targeting drunk or drugged drivers in this first holiday weekend of summer driving. The DUI task force will kick off Friday night by deploying the checkpoints in the cities of West Hollywood and Paramount. Special saturation patrols will be deployed in Lancaster.

All available officers of the California Highway Patrol will be deployed over Memorial Day Weekend to patrol freeways and county roads as part of their Maximum Enforcement Period.

Recent statistics indicate that 30% of all drivers in fatal roadway accidents had one or more drugs in their system. Another study of active drivers showed that more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving than did for alcohol. 14% of drivers tested positive for drugs compared to 7.3% for alcohol. Of all drugs, marijuana was the most prevalent.

Funding for the crackdown is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The next task force checkpoints will be deployed over Independence Day and Labor Day Holidays.
