A San Diego family Meets Tragedy On Texas Road Trip

In an accident that has received national publicity, People.com reports a California family met tragedy when two children were killed in a car crash. According to New Mexico State Police and the family’s GoFundMe page recently set up for medical expenses, the family was returning to San Diego from a vacation in San Antonio, Texas. While driving down a pitch-black highway “in the middle of nowhere” in New Mexico on the night of July 12, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle veered off the road and rolled multiple times, coming to a halt upside down and far enough from the road to not be visible to passing cars in the darkness.

The vehicle was almost entirely crushed, leaving the father, pregnant mother, and their six children trapped. The father was able to use voice command on his Apple Watch to call 911 and summon rescue crews, but while several kids were able to escape, by the time the parents were cut free, they’d been trapped inside for over an hour. The mother is pregnant, and while she was severely injured, their unborn child is, fortunately, healthy and uninjured following the wreck.

Their twelve-year-old daughter was pronounced dead at the scene. The rest of the family was transported to a local hospital, where their ten-year-old son succumbed to his injuries. The rest of the family were treated for injuries of varying severity.

The initial investigation indicated that the driver was experiencing fatigue and no criminal charges have been filed.
