The holidays brought with it many gatherings, get-togethers, and parties. Among adults, this usually includes the imbibing of alcoholic beverages. However, driving after you have consumed alcohol can be a crime if you’re over the legal limit.

In Fontana, 32 people were arrested on DUI charges over the holidays. The two week holiday season ended in early January.

The Fontana Police Department participated in a “Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign from December 19th to January 3rd.

Police spokesperson Martha Guzman-Hurtado made Fontana police department’s policy clear in a written statement, “The Fontana Police Department has zero tolerance for anyone driving under the influence. If you drink and drive in Fontana, you will be pulled over and arrested.”

Police officials reported that drunk drivers were responsible for 13 automobile accidents during the campaign period. Two of the crashes involved injuries while eight of them were thankfully injury free. Two hit-and-run crashes involved injuries and one hit-and-run had no injuries.

The penalties for drinking and driving can be severe. Those caught doing so can face jail time, loss of their driver’s license, paying towing fees, and other DUI related expenses. These can total over $10,000 on average.

The California Office of Highway safety provided funding for the campaign through the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.
