Woman Arrested for DUI Hit-and-Run in Fullerton

NBC Los Angeles reports that a 24-year-old Tustin woman has been arrested for DUI hit-and-run after she struck a pedestrian in Fullerton early Thursday, July 8, 2021,

According to a statement issued by Fullerton Police Department spokesman Corporal Billy Phu, the fatal crash happened at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Orangethorpe Avenue.

A male pedestrian had been crossing the street when a white Ford Sedan struck the victim, leaving him seriously injured. Police and paramedics were called to the scene. Despite all life-saving efforts made by emergency responders, the pedestrian died at the scene of the crash.

Police closed both sides of Orangethorpe Avenue just after the crash to conduct their investigation. The street was later reopened to westbound traffic late Thursday morning.

The Orange County Coroner’s Office said that the man died as the result of injuries he suffered in the crash.

After searching the area surrounding the fatal crash site, police officers found the suspect’s vehicle at approximately 4:12 a.m. Damage on the body of the sedan was consistent with that of a pedestrian/motor vehicle crash. 

Fullerton police officers found Katya Gladys Garcia-Ayala inside the car.  After a Drug Recognition Expert was called to the scene and conducted an investigation, Garcia-Ayala was arrested and taken into custody by Fullerton Police,  

Garcia-Ayala is now facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run.
