Two Dead in Patterson Crash

Earlier this month, the lives of two Patterson, California residents were claimed in a suspected DUI crash.

The accident happened on the night of Tuesday, August 9th.  Martin Padilla, 32, was heading eastbound on Pomelo Avenue.  He ran a stop sign at the intersection with Sycamore Avenue in southwest Patterson.

Padilla’s 1998 Ford Explorer collided with a 2002 Honda Accord as it entered the intersection.  The driver of the Accord, 40-year-old Zenaida Mendez was southbound on Sycamore, where there is no stop sign.

The impact of the accident tore the Honda Accord in half.  The vehicle was then pushed into an orchard tree on the south shoulder.  31-year-old Ulises Torres-Zepeda, who was a passenger in the Accord, was ejected from the vehicle.

Padilla’s Ford spun into a power pole and then overturned, coming to rest on the driver’s side of the vehicle on the south shoulder.

Mendez and her passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Padilla was discovered standing next to his vehicle and he was transported to Doctor’s Medical Center with serious injuries.  He was later transferred to Stanford Hospital in East Palo Alto.

Officers on the scene said that Padilla displayed signs of being under the influence.  He was arrested at Doctor’s Medical Center before being transferred.
