DUI’s often come with tragic consequences. They become even more so when an innocent life is cut short.

Late last month, a Pennville, Indiana teen tragically lost his life when a suspected drunk driver crashed his truck into the teen’s home. Seth Corwin was 16 and a member of the Jay County High School Marching Band. He had been watching TV in the living room at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred at about 10 pm in the evening. The driver of the pickup was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death. His blood alcohol level was .175, which is more than twice the legal limit.

Also in the home at the time were Corwin’s step brother, who was also in the living room and their mother, who was in a different area of the home. The step brother suffered minor injuries and the mother was not injured. The pickup truck went through the house and came to rest in the kitchen. Police estimate it was traveling at about 50 m.p.h. in an area where the speed limit is 20 m.p.h.

The Jay County Coroner stated that this was one of the most tragic accidents he had ever responded to in the course of his duties. The school’s band leader Kelly Smeltzer informed Corwin’s band mates of his death on the band’s Facebook page. She stated that he was a beloved member of the band and enjoyed playing percussion.
