Suspects in DUI Hit-and-Run Crash in Modesto Leads Deputies & CHP on a Chase

The Modesto Bee reports that three men led deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol officers on a chase after a three-vehicle DUI crash on Sunday.

CHP spokesperson Officer Tom Olsen told reporters that the crash happened at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Albers Road, just south of Dusty Lane, when 26-year-old Carlo Higuerra was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Sedan northbound on Albers. Two other men were inside the vehicle with him as passengers.

Higuerra’s vehicle drifted into the southbound lanes of Albers Road, where it collided with a 2016 Nissan SUV being driven by a 32-year-old man. A third vehicle, a 2022 Kia Sedan, being driven by a 21-year-old woman, was struck by flying debris from the initial collision.

Investigators say that immediately following the crash, Higuerra and his passengers abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene of the accident on foot, running westbound in the direction of the canal.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the CHP responded to the scene and located the three suspects a short time later.

The driver of the Nissan SUV suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital to be checked out. Higuerra also suffered minor injuries. The 21-year-old woman driving the Kia was uninjured in the crash.

Once Higuerra is released by doctors, he will be facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run.
