Suspected DUI Motorist Kills Pedestrian in North Highlands

The Sacramento Bee reports a man from Brooklyn, New York, driving a Corvette fatally struck a pedestrian crossing the street in North Highlands on Monday night.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the California Highway Patrol’s Sacramento Office, a male pedestrian was walking across the street at the intersection of Elkhorn Street and Butterball Way when Ilya Shamailov struck him with his 2014 Corvette.

The CHP says that a female passenger was also inside the Corvette with Shamailov at the time of the fatal crash. Authorities did not release her name, age, or area of residence.

Investigators say that Shamailov was traveling at a high rate of speed and was unable to slow his vehicle down in time to avoid hitting the man.

Emergency crews responded to the crash and declared the 32-year-old pedestrian dead at the scene. Shamailov’s passenger also suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was rushed by paramedics to an area hospital for treatment. Her current condition was not released at the time of the report.

Shamailov only suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and was immediately arrested after doctors released him. He was later booked into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of DUI.
