Suspected DUI Driver Believed Responsible for 1-year-old Girl’s Death

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that a 1-year-old tragically died after an SUV struck her on Saturday night. Authorities say that the 45-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a statement released by the San Diego Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 6:45 p.m. when the child was walking across the street near the intersection of Redwood Street and 39th Street.

A southbound 1999 Toyota 4Runner struck the child. Rather than stop immediately after the crash, eyewitnesses said that the driver fled the scene.

Paramedics rushed the child to an area hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries, which included severe head trauma. Despite all attempts to save the little girl’s life, she succumbed to her injuries.

An eyewitness to the crash was able to take down the license plate number of the SUV. Police traced the driver back to their home and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, hit-and-run,  and driving on a revoked or suspended license.

Police interviewed an adult who had been watching the child at the scene. No further information was available at the time of the report.

On behalf of the attorneys and staff of our firm, we would like to express our deepest condolences at this difficult time.
