Suspected DUI Driver Arrested After Head-On Crash

Getting arrested for DUI can be very expensive. Even a first-time DUI offense can mean $13,000 in fines and penalties, as well as losing your insurance and having your license suspended.

Patch.com reports that one person has been injured, and a Rohner Park motorist was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after a head-on collision in Petaluma on Saturday.

Petaluma Police took 25-year-old Adelberto Chavezarias of Rohnert Park into custody for his role in the crash.

According to the Petaluma Police Department statement released earlier this week, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Chavezarias was heading northbound North McDowell Boulevard and collided his vehicle head-on with a southbound motorist. The crash resulted in “major front end damage” and airbag deployment for both vehicles.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash. The driver of the southbound vehicle was taken to an area hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. Their current condition was not released at the time of the report.

Chavezarias suffered only minor injuries.

Police officers administered a series of field sobriety tests and determined that Chavezarias was DUI at the time of the crash. He was placed under arrest for felony DUI causing injury and booked into Sonoma County Jail.

Petaluma officials say that the number of DUI have notably increased in Petaluma in the past year. As of January of 2022, there were 15 DUI crashes and 5 DUI arrests. In 2021, there were 5 DUI arrests and no DUI crashes.

“If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home,” Police said.
