Sound Wall Crash Leads to Suspicion of DUI Arrest

Once again we have another story where an unusual crash leads officers to jump to conclusions about DUI. The Orange County Register has the story.

A car was driving northbound on Katella Avenue in Orange just after midnight. Witnesses say that the car lost control and crashed through a soundwall and into Handy Park.

The driver was okay enough to get out of the vehicle to check the damage. Police and paramedics arrived to investigate. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment, but then was arrested for suspicion of DUI.

Sometimes it really is just an accident, not DUI. Mechanical failure or driver fatigue are equally valid explanations for why a car would suddenly lose control. There might have even been something in the road that surprised the driver.

Prosecutors love to rack up DUI convictions, so if they think they have a chance at conviction they’ll arrest people to check them for DUI. However, even an arrest under suspicion of DUI can lead to lifelong repercussions for individuals. They can lose jobs and status undeservedly.
