Single-Vehicle Crash Leads to Fatality

A DUI can end in tragedy.  This tragedy can be magnified when friends or family are affected by the DUI.  No one should ever drink and drive, and if you have passengers, you should think about them before driving after having had a few drinks.

On the morning of Friday, July 29, a 26-year-old man was arrested and booked under suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.  The charges came after he slammed into a pole in Santa Ana.  The accident killed one of his passengers and seriously injured the other.

The crash, which involved just the Subaru Forrester, was reported near Bristol Street and MacArthur Boulevard at 8:30 a.m.

Authorities investigating the crash said that the driver had been traveling with friends and driving at high speeds.  His vehicle jumped the curb and crashed into the light pole, coming to rest more than 100 feet away after overturning.

According to officials, a 23-year-old male died in the crash.  Another passenger, a 20-year-old female was on life-support with critical injuries as a result of the accident.  A third passenger, a 22-year-old male, was in stable condition.

Cpl. Anthony Bertanga of the Santa Ana Police Department was attending another accident nearby and heard the collision.  He ran to the scene of the accident to render aid.

Bertanga said that based on signs and symptoms observed at the scene and later in the hospital, the driver was placed under arrest.
