San Diego Police Officer Injured by Suspected DUI Driver

DUI accidents are different from other types of accidents because they tend to cause more serious injuries and sometimes even fatalities. Any time someone faces the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they risk heavy fines, loss of insurance and jail time.

NBC in San Diego reports that an incident that happened earlier this week may have been caused by a driver operating under the influence. A female San Diego Police Department officer was injured in a crash with a suspected DUI driver on the night of Tuesday, July 27, 2021.

A spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department said in a statement that the incident happened in Chicano Park just after 10:30 p.m. while the officer was sitting inside her police cruiser. An SUV slammed into the official vehicle causing a great deal of damage to the police cruiser.

Paramedics responded to the scene and found the officer had suffered significant injuries. She was taken to an area hospital to be treated for injuries she suffered in the crash.

Officials with the San Diego Police Department did not release further information about the officer’s current condition.

The driver of the SUV was not identified; however, the case is currently under investigation by authorities. Impairment by either alcohol, drugs or both has not been ruled out.

This is a developing story.
