One Person in Critical Condition After DUI Crash, 2 People Arrested

The Press-Enterprise reports that two suspects have been arrested in connection to an alleged DUI crash in Riverside that left a pedestrian critically injured.

According to a statement released by the Riverside Police Department, the crash happened near the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Challen Avenue on Wednesday, September 28, 2021, at about noon. 

A 47-year-old Riverside resident was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck southbound on Van Buren Avenue towards Challen Avenue when a white Toyota Corolla being driven by a 20-year-old Riverside resident was attempting a left turn from northbound Van Buren Avenue onto Challen Avenue. The driver of the Toyota had a green arrow.

Police say that the pickup truck driver entered the intersection against a red light and collided with the Toyota Corolla. The pickup truck then left the intersection and struck a male pedestrian who had been walking on the sidewalk, seriously injuring him.

Emergency crews and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash. The pedestrian was rushed to an area hospital for treatment. He is currently listed in critical condition.

Neither the driver of the pickup truck nor the Toyota were injured in the accident.

After conducting field sobriety tests, Riverside Police officers determined that both drivers had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Both were arrested and taken into custody.

Authorities had not released the identities of the drivers at the time of the report.
