For most parents, it seems unthinkable to place their child in danger by getting behind the wheel after they have been drinking. KRON 4 reports that one mother, however, was arrested by Piedmont Police officers after she crashed a stolen SUV into several vehicles.
Her 1-year-old baby was reported to have been with her in the car.
Investigators say that the black SUV had been reported stolen in San Francisco. Piedmont Police officers spotted the vehicle driving erratically and attempted to stop it. The driver, however, refused to pull over.
The female driver continued driving at a high rate of speed in the vicinity of Wildwood Avenue and Highland Avenue and hit several vehicles before fleeing the scene on foot. Officers in pursuit found the disabled and abandoned vehicle on Warfield Avenue.
Police officers found hiding in the bushes with her infant in the bushes not far from the scene of the crash. Authorities have not released the identity of the woman pending further investigation.
Inside the stolen vehicle, they found mail stolen from several Oakland residents, burglary tools, and an open container of alcohol.
According to a press release issued by the Piedmont Police Department, officers detained the suspect, who was exhibiting clear signs of alcohol intoxication. She was booked into the Santa Rita Jail, and her child was placed with Child Protective Services.
In addition to DUI, the woman may likely be facing charges of auto theft, mail theft, child endangerment, and other related charges.
This is a developing story.
