NBC Los Angeles reports that a south Los Angeles accident Monday caused injuries to a Los Angeles Police Department officer in a suspected DUI-related incident.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, Los Angeles Police Department units responded to an emergency call near the area of West 93rd Street and South Broadway in South Los Angeles. A man with a gun had barricaded himself, according to Los Angeles Police Department spokespeople, and multiple units as well as a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team responded. (Note: the suspect at the barricade was eventually taken into custody.)
Around 8:30 p.m. on the same night, a Los Angeles Police Department unit was parked near the corner of West Colden Avenue and South Broadway on the perimeter of the incident, several blocks south, monitoring the situation. The police officer was sitting in his squad car when another driver, who is suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident, struck the officer’s vehicle.
The police officer was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not reportedly life-threatening. Police investigators are still investigating the incident and attempting to determine if the driver was indeed under the influence.
