Infant Daughter Doing Well After Mother Killed in DUI Accident

NBC Los Angeles followed up on a tragic accident that was reported last week involving an alleged drunk driver that hit and killed a pregnant woman as she strolled down an Anaheim street with her husband.

The accident, which was reported on last week, occurred when a 40-year-old woman who has previously been convicted of multiple DUIs and was driving on a suspended license crashed into the pregnant 23-year-old woman as she walked down a sidewalk on Katella Avenue around 7:30 pm on Wednesday. The woman was six weeks away from giving birth and an emergency c-section was performed at the UCI Medical Center, saving the baby’s life although they couldn’t save the mother.

The baby, who her father described as “a little fighter just like her mother,” has been in the neonatal intensive care unit but has had feeding tubes removed and is improving every day, recognizing her father’s voice and recovering from her ordeal. The father expressed gratitude for an outpouring of support for his family.

The drunk driver has been charged with second-degree murder, driving under the influence causing injury, and driving on a suspended license. She is eligible to spend life in prison due to previous DUI convictions. A GoFundMe page has been set up for medical costs and to ensure the baby is well-provided-for despite the tragic loss of her mother.
