KTLA 5 reports that local law enforcement authorities in Gardena have arrested a 19-year-old Hawthorne man after a tragic accident where he was allegedly responsible for the death of another driver while driving under the influence (DUI).
The man was reportedly driving a stolen Dodge pickup truck on Saturday morning when he crashed into a Nissan Sentra sedan near the intersection of West Redondo Beach Boulevard and South Vermont Avenue, according to reports from the Gardena Police Department. After crashing into the Sentra, he abandoned the truck and fled on foot to avoid arrest.
First responders arrived at the scene around 11:50 a.m. The driver of the Nissan was taken to Harbor University Of California-Los Angeles Medical Center, where she succumbed to the wounds she sustained in the accident. Her identity has not been released by authorities as of yet.
Officers were able to locate and arrest the man suspected of causing the crash, on suspicion of homicide, vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence.
