First Fatality of Holiday Weekend is a Young Child

During holiday weekends, police amp up drunken driving patrols.  People have parties and gatherings where drinking is common.  These people have to eventually get home and some decide to drive themselves.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the first traffic fatality of the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend was just two years old.

The accident occurred at 8:51 p.m. on Friday evening and reporting for the holiday weekend began at 6 p.m.

The accident was a single vehicle crash that occurred on Malibu Canyon Road just south of Seaver Road.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Magdalena Lisi.  Her relationship to the child that was killed has not been established.

Lisi had been driving a 2011 Kia north on Malibu road when the vehicle drifted to the right, veering off the road into the guard rail.  Lisi then over-corrected, sending the vehicle into the hillside on the opposite side of the roadway.  The vehicle overturned.

Lisi suffered serious injuries as the result of the accident.  She was arrested at the hospital later under suspicion of DUI.  The little girl, who was seated in the rear passenger seat, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the rollover.  She died at the scene.

In total, over the weekend, there were 58 DUI arrests in Los Angeles County.  This is down from 67 last year.  Statewide, there were 281 arrests, down from a count of 320 last year.
