DUI Suspect Arrested In Connection to Long Beach Fatal Crash

NBC in Los Angeles reports that the Long Beach Police Department has arrested a suspected DUI driver in connection to a fatal crash that killed a man in a wheelchair on the night of Saturday, June 12th.

A spokesperson for the law enforcement agency told NBC in a statement that the accident happened in the Los Altos neighborhood at the intersection of Stearns Street and Randor Avenue at approximately 11:19 p.m.

According to Long Beach Police Lt. Shaleana Benson, the man in the wheelchair was crossing the street with a shopping cart containing his belongings when he was struck by a 2016 Honda Civic traveling westbound on Stearns Street. 

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the crash; however, all attempts to revive the victim failed. 

The 26-year-old male driver was arrested at the fatal crash scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Law enforcement officials have not released any further information pending notification of family members of the victim. 

Our hearts and our prayers go out to the family of the victim for their tragic loss. If this driver is proven to be DUI at the time of the crash, we hope the family can receive due compensation.
