Drunk Driver Doesn’t Notice Man Caught in Windshield

Drunk driving can end in more than just the charges a person faces or the loss of license.  It can end in tragedy.  Accidents can result from deciding to drink and then drive and sometimes, the results of these accidents can be horrific.

An alleged drunk driver hit a pedestrian early in the morning on Monday, June 28th.  She then drove for more than a mile with the man stuck in her windshield.

29-year-old Esteysi Sanchez was arrested on multiple charges, including suspicion of DUI, felony hit and run, and vehicular manslaughter.  She is being held on $1.5 million dollars bail.

The accident occurred on the sidewalk along Mission Avenue in Oceanside at about 6:20 a.m.

Sanchez fatally hit the man, identified as a known transient, and the force of the collision forced him through the windshield and into the passenger seat.  Sanchez then continued to drive for a mile before she pulled over and walked home.

Sanchez is a resident of Oceanside, but does not have a drivers license.  She applied for one in March of 2015, but did not complete the process.

Witnesses told investigators that Sanchez jumped the curb and struck the man. The force of the impact ripped one of the legs from his body, causing it to land on the trunk of the car.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene where the car was found.

Sanchez went home, where her boyfriend called the police and she was found there about an hour later.
