ABC 10 News in San Diego reports a driver was seriously injured in what police investigators in San Diego County believe was a possible DUI crash.
According to a statement released by the San Diego Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 11:00 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 2021, on Santo Road near the intersection at Shields Street.
Authorities say that a 30-year-old male driver was heading southbound on Santo Road when he lost control of his 2015 black Dodge Challenge. The vehicle jumped the curb and veered into northbound traffic lanes of Santo Road. The car then went back across the median into the southbound lanes before plowing through shrubs, trees, plants, and a bus bench.
The vehicle then hit a retaining wall along the east side of the street and bounced back into the northbound lanes of traffic, where the driver was ejected from the car.
Police were called to the scene, where officers found the driver lying unconscious in the number 1 northbound lane of Santo Road.
Paramedics were dispatched to the scene and rushed the man to an area hospital to treat injuries he suffered in the crash. Police say that the unidentified driver suffered cuts and lacerations to his face and lower extremities and significant internal injuries.
San Diego Police Department detectives believe that the crash was alcohol-related.
The accident is currently under investigation.
