Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DUI After Fatal Crash on Highway 58

ABC 23 reported on their website Monday that a woman was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of DUI after a fatal crash on Highway 58.

According to a statement released by the California Highway Patrol, dispatchers began receiving calls just after 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, about a head-on collision involving two vehicles west of General Beale Road.

Investigators determined that the driver of a 2016 Nissan Sentra traveling westbound on Highway 58 made an unsafe turn. During the process of the turn, the vehicle left the road and crossed into the eastbound lanes of the highway, where it collided with a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Paramedics responding to the crash declared the 52-year-old woman from San Ramon driving the Tahoe dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan has been identified as 27-year-old Ayana Council of San Mateo, California. After failing field sobriety tests administered by CHP officers, Council was placed under arrest on the charges of DUI murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, and felony driving under the influence of alcohol.

The fatal crash is currently under investigation.
