Fox Channel 5 News San Diego reported on the arrest Sunday of a driver suspected of driving while impaired in an accident that killed the passenger riding in his vehicle.
A 28-year-old Alpine man is in police custody after the incident, which occurred just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes of California State Route 125 in La Mesa, just south of the interchange with Interstate 8. According to spokespeople from the California Highway Patrol. The suspect was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck when he slammed into a Dodge Ram flatbed tow truck parked on the shoulder of the road to assist a disabled motorist. The tow truck driver was not in the vehicle when the impact occurred.
A woman of 37 years of age was riding in the front passenger seat of the Ford F-150 and suffered massive blunt force trauma. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and her identity has been withheld from the press pending notification of her family or next of kin.
The suspect, the tow truck driver, and the motorist whose car was disabled were all uninjured in the accident.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and is currently booked into the San Diego County Detention Center.
