Being a professional athlete or other celebrity such as an actor or a musician brings with it being in the media spotlight. Such people often must deal with their DUI charges making national, if not international, news. It appears that it is no different even after such celebrities have retired and left the media spotlight. People reports on former MBA star and coach Derek Fisher pleading guilty to DUI charges.
Earlier this summer, Derek Fisher, a former MBA player for the Los Angeles Lakers, was involved in an accident and arrested under suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The arrest came after Fisher’s car overturned early in the morning on a California Freeway.
Reportedly, Fisher allowed a vehicle to pass his Cadillac and then he hit the raised curb and guardrail, flipping the vehicle. The vehicle ended up blocking the third and fourth lanes of the highway. Also in the vehicle was former Basketball Wives star Gloria Govan. She was not injured in the incident.
Last Tuesday, Fisher appeared in court and pleaded no contest to driving with a blood alcohol content over .08 percent. The charge is a misdemeanor. Fisher will have to serve informal probation, pay a fine, attend 10 days of community service and an education class.
Fisher spent 18 years in the NBA and won five NBA Championships with the LA Lakers. He also served as a coach for the New York Knicks from 2014-2016.
A spokesman for Fisher said that he is deeply remorseful for the incident and wants to move on and set a better example for his three children.
