Crash Near High School Kills One, Injures Five

While many DUIs may occur when people have more of a tendency to drink, such as on the weekend, they can occur at any time. Sometimes DUIs occur in the middle of the day when you wouldn’t expect it.

A Whittier high school student was killed and four others injured in a crash that occurred late Tuesday morning. The driver of the SUV involved in the crash was later arrested under suspicion of DUI.

The accident happened in the 8000 block of Villaverde Drive, only a little over a block away from La Serna High School. It was a little after 11:30 am.

The driver, 19-year-old Daniel Vasquez, was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle. The SUV then careened onto the sidewalk, struck a brick mailbox, and then rolled over.

14-year-old Ivette Macias, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vasquez and four other people were transported to the hospital. Two of the victims were air-lifted in critical condition and the other two were transported by ambulance.

Vasquez was also transported to a nearby hospital, where he as treated for his injuries. He was arrested immediately following his release.

A witness who heard the crash told authorities that it sounded as though the SUV was going very fast. This witness, who was the first on the scene, said that he saw beer cans outside the overturned vehicle.
