Checkpoints Catch Drivers

Sometimes police will set up DUI and driver’s license checkpoints to catch people who might be driving under the influence or illegally.  These checkpoints can effectively stop drivers who are drunk before they can get into an accident.  They also serve to stop drivers who have suspended licenses.

On July 1st, the Santa Monica Police Department traffic unit held a checkpoint on Pico Boulevard.  The checkpoint was to check for intoxication and those with suspended or no drivers license.

A vehicle was directed to the screening area about 10:45 p.m.  The driver of the vehicle was investigated for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Unable to complete a field sobriety test, the driver also had a suspended drivers license.  The driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest.

Identified as Bradley Edgardo Melendez, 23, he was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.  It was not reported what the substance was the driver had consumed.

Bail was set at $1,000.
