5 Freeway Crash Closes Lanes

A deadly crash claimed the life of a Simi Valley man last weekend. Police believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the 2-vehicle accident that closed down lanes on the 5 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a 50-year-old Simi Valley man was killed in a two-vehicle crash. The crash happened on the 5 Freeway in Sun Valley shortly after 10 p.m. last Saturday, October 22nd.

The deceased, who was driving a 2005 Saturn Ion erratically just prior to the crash, was not immediately identified. He crashed the Ion into the center divider and ended up coming to a stop in the carpool lane on the facing the wrong way on the freeway.

24-year-old Nicole Castaneda was driving a 1997 Toyota Camry south on the 5 Freeway and collided with the Saturn.

Castaneda only suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

Police believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 10:14 p.m., shutting down several lanes of the 5 Freeway. The SigAlert was canceled and all lanes reopened by 2 a.m.
