405 Crash Injures LAPD Officer, May Have Been DUI

Police might be more at risk for accidents than other drivers out there, despite the fact that they are well-trained. Wen stopping motorists on the side of the road, they are at particular risk. If you happen to get into an accident by hitting a police car, it is not that much different from any other accident, except that instead of calling your insurance company first, your first call might be to a lawyer. If you have been drinking, things might be further complicated, resulting in arrest. NBC Los Angeles reports on a suspected drunk driver who hit a police officer.

In an incident that occurred on Monday, December 11th, an LAPD officer was hospitalized after being hit by a suspected DUI driver who then struck another car.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the officer had pulled over another vehicle for speeding on the 405 Freeway near Santa Monica. The driver suspected of DUI then crashed into the police cruiser, pinning the officer between his vehicle and the motorist he had pulled over.

A second crash, believed to have been caused by rubbernecking, also occurred a little later on the southbound 405 Freeway. The accident involving the officer took place on the northbound side of the freeway.

The officer was hospitalized with a serious leg injury.

The suspected DUI driver, Douglas Donovan, 34, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Neither he nor the driver of the other vehicle was injured.
