ITN Article 11.17.2017 – LA DUI
We are all aware that a DUI has consequences that can include fines, loss of license, and the requirement of attending DUI school. All of these can be minor inconveniences compared to what can happen if a person is involved in an accident while driving under the influence. Those consequences can be even worse if that accident claims the life or seriously injures another person. News 3 Las Vegas reports on a 15-year sentence received by a woman who killed a man in a DUI accident.
The incident took place at about 11:16 p.m. on June 28, 2016. Authorities say that was when 26-year-old Whitney Greco struck 29-year-old Adan Cohen. Cohen had been walking along Sunset Road when Greco struck him, dragging him for a time before she struck a raised median and then a signpost. Cohen was found at that location and pronounced dead. Still, Greco kept driving, where she struck a 2015 Chrysler and kept going, striking another signpost. After striking a signal light pole, Greco finally pulled over where authorities made contact with her.
Greco failed field sobriety tests. Breathalyzer tests and later blood tests revealed that Greco’s blood-alcohol content was over the legal limit. She also had marijuana in her system.
After pleading guilty to charges relating to Cohen’s death, Greco apologized to the man’s family. Attorneys for the defense made the argument that Greco was not at fault because Cohen was walking in a dark area, three feet into the roadway.
On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Greco to 15 years in prison. She will be eligible for parole in five.
